Experience and Education

  • Graduation from high school, vocational school, or GED and
  • Five (5) years experience in operation and maintenance of large (25,000 cfm) air handling equipment, steam pressure reducing stations, chill water systems, pumps, high pressure boilers, and auxiliary equipment and control systems, must be proficient in at least 5 systems.
  • Must have basic computer skills (i.e. MS Office, Outlook etc.).
  • Must be a self-starter; Have good communications skills, must be able to communicate and coordinate with contractors.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to train Maintenance Workers and HVAC Mechanic I.
  • May be required to perform job duties of HVAC Mechanic III in his absence.

Job Duties

  • Performs more complex diagnostic HVAC repairs and serves as a lead mechanic on projects and system issues.
  • Diagnoses cause of problems and/or failures in HVAC systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair and replacement needs. Informs appropriate supervisory or managerial personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies, and takes appropriate action.
  • Repairs HVAC systems and/or components (e.g. pumps, motors, AHU's, exhaust fans, piping, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a comfortable working environment.
  • Works with vendors and contractors getting quotes for equipment repairs. Assists as needed with vendors to ensure proper repairs are made to the equipment.
  • Support area shift coverage, after hours or extended projects as needed and assists in major maintenance repairs. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and equipment failures.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. Trains and mentors new personnel in area of expertise as required. Teaches basic knowledge of codes and proper tool use.
  • Maintains tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition. Works with other mechanics and shops to ensure that equipment room spaces are free of trash, moisture leaks, unnecessary equipment, or an unsafe condition.
  • Acts in a leadership capacity in the absence of the shop foreman.
