Experience and Education


Minimum of five to seven years of increasing responsibility in a laboratory managerial role in a health care setting is required. Experience managing department with 40 or more employees. Bachelor Degree in Science. Master Degree in Health Administration, Business or Public Health preferred. Clinical lab experience required. Certification as a Histotechnologist, HTL (ASCP), Pathology Assistant, PA (ASCP),Histotechnician, HT (ASCP) or Cytotechnologist, CT (ASCP), SCT (ASCP), or related field or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT,ASCP), CLS (NCA), as defined under the CLIA 88 regulations. MLT or equivalent certification or experience will also be considered.

Job Duties


Oversees the AP Program for the Clinical Laboratory Services (CLS)- wide system, covering all associated hospitals and clinics, is accountable for the direct management of the multiple laboratory disciplines through supervisors, to provide high quality, accurate and timely test results in a cost-efficient manner.
Is responsible for hiring, developing, motivating, counseling, overseeing and training, including cross-training, and ensuring competency of the AP employees in all shifts at all facilities. Holds staff accountable for maintaining & enforcing high, fair & consistent standards of performance; prioritizes assignments & makes staffing adjustments in accordance with budgetary guidelines; monitors the section operating and capital budgets; and maintains the productivity goals of the section.
Maintains their technical expertise to analyze current methods and systems and develops innovative ways to improve operations. Leads the validation of new AP test methods, process control and analytical proficiency, and supports development of new methods/protocols to improve laboratory efficiency, compliance and accreditation.
Oversees an effective AP Qual. Improvement program, in conformance with the Clinical Lab Services & UTSW University Hospitals Quality Programs; assists in the development & implementation of department goals & objectives; maintains accreditations including, but not limited with, the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Srvcs (CMS), the Joint Commission (JC), & Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Also ensures the laboratory is compliant with_OSHA regulations & HIPPA.
Serves as liaison with other areas as needed, specifically serves as liaison between the AP laboratory and the pathologists.
Ensures the accuracy and integrity of the test information and laboratory data in the Laboratory Information System(s) (LIS) in coordination with the Information Resources department.
Prepares and/or participates in the development of the department budget in conjunction with established goals and objectives. Ensures budgetary goals are met on an annual basis.
Is responsible for promoting effective communication and teamwork with all laboratory and hospital staff among the UTSW University Hospitals. Serves as a resource and communication liaison by facilitating timely and accurate dissemination of information to the laboratory staff.
