EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.

Three (3) years of experience in the field of Psychiatry within a hospital setting.
Current American Heart Association BLS is required and SAMA certification or attainment during orientation.

1. Collects data to include: Intake and output, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure. Performs skin assessments. Recognizes and immediately reports values outside normal parameters to the nurse. Demonstrates awareness of age-specific considerations in gathering these assessments (children, adolescents, adults, older adults). Performs sterile procedures in accordance with the Department of Nursing and Infection Control Policies and Procedures to include sterile gloves, dressing changes and in/out cauterizations. Assists in facilitating treatment milieu including recreational activities and groups. Participates in codes/interventions to protect the patient from harming self or others.

2. Supervises daily workflow and addresses issues related to the department in the absence of department leaders. Assists with the establishment, implementation, and maintenance of protocols, policies, and practices of the department. Regularly assists in communicating program objectives ensuring compliance and standard of care is met.

3. Demonstrates independence in performing patient care procedures as outlined by Leadership: Required to participate in conferences and lead in-services within the department.

4. Troubleshoots equipment and software and acts as a resource for the department in evaluating new equipment, ordering supplies, assessing effectiveness of current policy and standard of care. Provides input to the medical director, department manager and others regarding quality and patient care issues as needed. Is knowledgeable in correct procedure performance and recognition of clinically significant events. Performs routine database checks and prunes, clips and archives files as needed according to department policy.

5. Actively assists department leadership in continuous process improvement which includes audits of charges/billing reconciliation, record review, staff orientation and training, staff development and successful monitoring and documentation of employee competencies. Organizes and/or leads in-service training, monthly lectures, performance evaluations, team huddles, physician-tech record reviews and other activities under the direction of the department manager.

6. Actively works with other department leaders and care team members on projects related to Psychiatry as assigned by manager, including community events, accreditation activities, Nursing and other care team coordination, improvement of coordination of care, training and learning initiatives.

7. Orients new staff and students to work areas. Collaborates with other nursing staff and hospital employees to create an environment that is conducive to the retention of qualified personnel. Works with other members of a multi-disciplinary team in leading milieu activities such as current events groups, community meetings, goals groups, activities of daily living groups, and/or recreational activities, as appropriate to the specified patient population.

8. Welcomes new patient/patient's family. Knocks before entering room. Smiles and introduces self. Wears name tag. Immediately alerts nurse if patient/patient's family seems or is unhappy and you have not resolved the issue. Perform (within scope) initial safety evaluations during intake treatment procedures. Participates in the development and implementation of patient treatment programs.
Maintains confidentiality of patient records.

9. Verifies identify of patient and provides adequate patient ID on all patients. Ensures patient safety at all times. Keeps equipment clean and in working order. Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to management promptly. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate actions to take during an emergency situation. Complies with dept/institutional standards for handling infectious, hazardous, or flammable materials.

10. Assumes accountability for all actions in the workplace. Reports errors promptly. Maintains established institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, and safety, environmental and infection control standards, Produce and continue to maintain all credentialing, certifications, licensing, and training that is required for the position.

11. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions. Attends and participates in group sessions, in-service education, and staff meetings. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.

12. Utilizes downtime to assist others and/or to provide additional amenities to patients and/or patients families.
